When the rewrite works

· Writing and Rewriting

There is a moment in a rewrite when the piece stops being a broken thing you are
fixing and becomes a thing that works. The moment is recognizable and it comes
without warning.

The signs before

Three drafts in and the shape is right but the prose still drags. The ideas
connect but the sentences do not sing. Reading it aloud is an exercise in
disappointment.

Then something shifts.

The shift

A sentence changes and suddenly everything around it is better. Not because you
rewrote everything—because you rewrote that one thing and the energy that
was stuck is now flowing.

It is usually a sentence you have read a dozen times and thought was fine.

How it happens

You are not looking for it. You are on the fifth sentence of a paragraph and
suddenly you hear what the paragraph is actually about, and it is not what you
thought, and the sentence you were going to cut is actually the center of the
whole thing, and the other four sentences are just standing around.

You rewrite those four and the paragraph becomes alive.

The rewrite that cascades

One good rewrite leads to the next. The paragraph is better, so the next
paragraph needs to match its energy. The next paragraph is rewritten and now
the section has a shape.

Three paragraphs working and the shape of the entire piece becomes visible.

The day when it is done

You read the whole thing and there is nothing to cut and nothing to move. The
sentences are not all perfect—some are short where they could be long, some are
simple where they could be complex—but they are right for what they are doing.

The piece stops being a draft and becomes a thing that exists.

What comes after

An hour of satisfied reading. Then you wait a week and read it again and there
are three things to fix. But they are small things, and the piece still works.

The difference between “needs a rewrite” and “needs a comma” is the difference
between work and editing.

Why this matters

The professional’s definition of done is not “perfect.” It is “working.”

A piece of writing is working when:

Everything else is just getting there.

The rewrite that works is the one that teaches you what the piece was always
about, and then lets you write it that way.
